Certainly, one of my favorites are the studies of REM and sleep depriviation by
Rechtschaffen
and colleagues. Rats are place on a turntable suspended over water. If the
experimental
falls asleep or goes into REM, then table begins to rotate dumping the slumbering rat
into the
water. Thus, depending on the study, the experimental rat will be either sleep or REM
deprived. The control rat will get an occassional 40 winks.
The only reference I have available at home is: Rechtschaffen, A., Gillialand, M. A.,
Bergmann, B. M., and Winter, J. B. (1983). Science, 221, 182-184.
Best wishes,
