Chuck got it right. It's the spontaneous part that gets people in trouble.
For example, let's say PBS is airing a special tonight that you want to
show in class tomorrow. It's okay to tape it and show it. BUT, you must
erase it after you show it. Also, if you copy something from a book one
semester in a "spontaneous" manner to give to your class, it's not a
problem. However, if you continue to use this hand out, and plan to do so
ahead of time, then it becomes illegal because you should get permission
first. (This last one is more of a grey area to me because of fair use
laws..) Note that I'm not a lawyer and saying that I said it's okay does
not necessarily mean it is so (that's the standard disclaimer I've learned
to give about legal advice...)
