If I may be so presumptuous, I don't think it's that complicated.
Psychologists have known that men and women *tend* to give different kinds
of support in friendships. The trend is for men to be great at problem
solving support and for women to be great at emotional support.
Therefore, perhaps men with a large number of women friends are simply
receiving more emotional support compared to men with a few number of women
friends.
Just one psychologist's opinion. . .
