The only clue to the sex of tellytubbies is through pronoun reference. I
think that all are referred to as "he". At any rate I recall noticing
during one episode that the big one was described as putting things into
"his" purse. (In case you're wondering, I do have two pre-school
children). Of course if some tellytubbies were "he" and others "she,"
Falwell would be complaining about the immoral cohabitation of members of
the opposite sex. And others would complain about the sex-typing of the
girl teletubby having a purse. (I wonder what would happen if they were
all girls. Would Falwell think that the one wearing the man's style hat
was a lesbian?)
Actually this all would make for a very interesting discussion in a
psychology of gender or similar course.
Now for a truly off-teaching question on this topic. The biggest
teletubby has been referred to as the purple one on this list. My mother
happened to give a toy of this one to my daughter for Christmas and it is
purple. It's the same color that Barney appears to be on my TV, but when
I see the show he/it looks dark blue. Can anyone explain this to me?
