Thanks to those who posted suggestions for grading group work.
Although I didn't raise the initial question this is something I
always had a problem with as a student and continue to have
difficulties with as an instructor. The other issue I have with this
arrangement is absences. Consider the following scenarios:

Students are assigned to work on an assignment in pairs. The
assignment is due at 5PM Friday afternoon. The class does
not meet during its scheduled time, Friday 1-2:50PM so that students
have time to complete the assignment (that is, they cannot claim that
they were unable to find ANY common time to meet before the
assignment was due). That afternoon you get a phone call/email
message from one of the students saying they are unable to meet with
their partner - or you get a message that their partner did not show
up for the meeting. Now what?

If it is the kind of assignment that really does not _require_ two
people, I can see letting the one student complete the assignment
individually (even though this assignment for that student now will
no longer meet the course objective of working in pairs/small
groups). But, what if the project _truly requires_ a pair of
students?
