I believe it was the Discovery Channel that had three hours worth of sleep
information a year or so ago. The shows were called "The Sleep Files" and
incorporated a lot of research and interviews with researchers. The first
segment of the first show dealt with REM sleep and presented hypnagogic
hallucinations during sleep paralysis as something that may be responsible
for many alien abduction reports. One of the issues addressed was that
stories associated with hypnagogic hallucinations have been reported
throughout history and these stories tend to reflect the folklore of that
place and time. It was a fairly well done segment, complete with
interview clips with a man who was absolutely convinced he had been
abducted by aliens!
