We are always looking for real-life practical examples of the
usefulness of psychology. The article below caught my interest as a
lifelong Cleveland Indians fan and as a psychology teacher. I hope,as
psychology teachers, you all will find it interesting and usefull.
Ramirez decides MVP means most valuable psychologist

To show appreciation to Dr. Charles Maher, Manny Ramirez
gave the Indians team psychologist the Golden Tomahawk
award he was presented before Monday's home opener
against Kansas City. The award, voted on by Indians
players,
goes to the most valuable player from the previous
season.
Ramirez hit .294 with 45 homers and 145 runs batted in
last
year.
"It was a total surprise when Manny gave it to me," said
Maher.
Ramirez credited Maher with helping him concentrate and
focus during games. The mental lapses that marred
Ramirez's
game in the past were greatly reduced in 1998.
Statistically,
he had the best season of any right fielder in franchise
history.
Maher is in his fourth season with the Indians. He has
worked
with the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees and
currently works for the New York Jets.
He's a professor at Rutgers University.
The Indians gave Maher and assistant Ray Negron an
office
just outside the Indians locker room this year where
they can
meet with players. There's one hitch: The office isn't
big
enough to hold a couch.
