Deb, the most popular scale used in the literature to measure belief in the
paranormal is Tobacyk's Revised Paranormal Beliefs Scale. I used it recently
but, there are aspects of this instrument that I am not comfortable with. For
example, it yields 7 separate subscales (e.g., superstition, witchcraft) but
two of them, PSI (another term for ESP) and Precognition (a form of ESP!), are
conceptually the same. There are other issues as well (see Lawrence, 1995),
however, as I said above, it _is_ the most widely used scale of paranormal
beliefs. You may wish to contact Tobacyk for a copy of the scale and scoring

Parapsychologists have developed a number of such scales. One recently
developed scale can be found in Thalbourne & Delin (1993). Thalbourne's

Messer and Richard Griggs used one in a study that appeared in ToP some years
ago which I liked a lot as it measured belief as well as involvement in the
paranormal.
