As one who has done a little research in the psychology of humor, I should
be agreeing with you, but my issue in supporting Edward's position is the
way these things get forwarded to us. The problem for me is that when they
come in -- at least to my server -- they are a jumble of old forwardings
which take up excessive screen space, and multiple ">'s" which throw lines
out, etc. The result is that I delete them without reading them. Then, I
wonder whether I've missed something truly funny and, perhaps, relevant to
what I do.

It is that frustration that leads me to suggest that if someone wants to
forward humor to the list, s/he should take the time to clean it up so
that we can read and enjoy it.
