Hi, all,

As I begin updating my Intro syllabus for the Fall, I seek your ideas for
writing assignments. In the past, we had a lab as part of the course, and
lab write-ups provided writing opportunities. Last year, when the lab
became a separate course, instead I had students choose two of three paper
topics. The papers were to be essays about 5 pages long in which the
students combined psychological theory and research with a given experience,
for example, to write about the principles of sensation and perception as
they experience them during a typical day on campus, or to present an
ethically questionable research scenario to nonpsychologically-trained
acquaintances and then compare their reactions to APA standards. In the
Spring (our Intro is two semesters), students read two journal articles and
summarize/react in addition to the experiential papers. The students
generally enjoy these assignments, but I am interested in hearing what
others do to incorporate writing into Intro.

Thanks!

Rory
