in lieu of make-up

 I saw a course outline where a prof does not give a make-up but
in lieu of a make-up the student must write at least a ten page summary of
each chapter that was assigned for the exam.(So if there were 4 chapters
assigned,this would amount to at least 40 pages).
I am still trying to figure out how will this make-up option be graded.
Do you other options in lieu of make-ups?
