Hi Ken (and others interested in WebCT),
This is the first semester I'm trying WebCT, and so I'm just
getting my feet wet with the basics (I'm a baby-steps kind
of guy). So, right now I use it for just a few things. I post a
copy of the syllabus. I also post an outline for each of my
lecture notes. That is, I take my actual lecture notes and
delete the details, leaving sufficient space under each topic
for students to write their notes into. I've noticed that many
students are printing them out before class to use in this
way. They may also find them to be useful study guides.
I also use WebCT to post the answers to biweekly quizzes,
so as not to use valuable class time for that purpose (and
in order to provide people who missed a quiz access to
what they missed).
I have not tried to do chats, or to upload Power Point
presentations (I'll have to learn to use Power Point
first!).
Yes, it's cumbersome and not easy to learn (I've had to
pester a more knowledgeable grad student more times
than I care to admit). I'll ask the students to provide
me with feedback on its use in my course evaluations.
Anybody here have any helpful hints?
-Mike
