I would just like to let people know that I use the original "Gloria" videos whenever
I teach about therapy - and despite the age of the videos I think they are an
excellent way to show students that all therapy is not alike - and Gloria is never
laying on a couch!

Depending on the class, I usually take a 5 to 15 minute segment from each type of
therapy to show the class (each video is about an hour long - I never show the entire
thing.) For students to see the same woman, with the same issues and problems
responding so differently to the different therapists really teaches students about
the importance of the therapist in therapy!

There are a few really good examples of each type of therapy "in action" in these
videos - in addition to an interview with each psychologist and with Gloria after the
experience. Interestingly, Gloria says she most preferred Perls and his
confrontational Gestalt therapy - which most of the students do not find very
attractive from the video. Gloria's preference really surprises students, and I think
shows them that the "best" therapy depends on the individual and the issues they are
dealing with!

Although the videos are old I would highly recommend them. In fact, the datedness of
it occasionally adds to the entertainment value - when Gloria says things like "hook
myself a man" and "chooch" (sp?) the class always laughs out loud!

so what, can't we all be brothers?

A couple of weeks ago someone on TIPS was looking for information about the
video series, "Three Approaches to Psychotherapy" - the series in which a
client called Gloria has separate counseling sessions with Rogers, Perls, and
Ellis. At the time I could not locate information about where to obtain the
series, but now I have it. The "Gloria" videos are available from:
    Psychological and Educational Films
    PMB #252
    3334 East Coast Highway
    Corona Del Mar, CA 92625
    (888) 750-4029

In addition to the "Gloria" videos, the same source has the two subsequent
series, Three Approaches to Psychotherapy II (Rogers, Shostrom, and Lazarus)
and Three Approaches to Psychotherapy III (Strupp, Meichenbaum, and Beck), as
well as Three Approaches to Group Therapy (Shostrom, Ellis, and Greenwald) and
a number of other individual and group therapy videos. I have seen several of
them, and most are quite good. Unfortunately, they are also fairly expensive.
