Many of my studnets present a stronger application after being "off" for
six months to a year. This is because we are a commuter campus with older
students who also have jobs and sometimes families. Trying to balance
coursework, "outside" responsibilities, gre prep, and research often gets
too overwhelming. By spending time after graduation focused on locating
grad programs, preparing for the gre, finishing research projects,
drafting personal statements, etc., I believe they greatly increase their
chances of acceptances.

I think the key question to ask is whether the time off will increase the
student's chances of being accepted into programs that would be good for
that student.
