Hi folks

I am writing to tell you about an open tenure-track position in the
Psychology Department at Wheaton College and to ask you to pass along this
letter and the job description to people who you think might be interested
in applying.

Wheaton is devoted to both teaching and scholarship, in that order. All
members of the department have ongoing research programs; some have earned
recent prestigious awards and some present papers and publish articles
with our best undergraduates as co-authors. But our primary working
relationships at Wheaton occur in pedagogy, which enjoys excellent
administrative support. Wheaton is a dynamic place to teach.

Our college-wide curricular innovations include the "Balanced Curriculum
Project" in which the Psychology Department led the college in integrating
issues of gender throughout the curriculum. Many faculty members are
engaged in research and publication on gender issues. In addition,
Wheaton also requires at graduation a "second transcript" of reflective
field experience, which indicates Wheaton's commitment to the integration
of field learning in our courses, another area in which our department
leads the way.

There also is an institutional commitment to diversity, both in atmosphere
and in gender and ethnic minority representation in all areas of the
college community. Men and women are equally represented in the faculty.
Our curriculum includes non-Western and cultural diversity courses as part
of Wheaton's general education requirements. The administration and staff
provide a supportive environment for racial, ethnic, and sexual
orientation minorities. Recently students have organized to advance a
diversity agenda and the faculty has passed a resolution committing itself
to greater ethnic diversity in its numbers, which are expanding.

Wheaton supports its faculty even beyond the competitive salaries that
have risen sharply recently due to a nationally recognized faculty salary
plan. We offer a pre-tenure sabbatical program that allows faculty a
semester away at full pay. Course reductions can be offered in special
circumstances. There are numerous opportunities for intellectual
development through, for example, generous grants for faculty scholarship,
in-service training programs, and faculty overseas internships to
non-Western countries.

Our unusually large department for a small college (8.5 faculty slots and
more than 125 students majoring) allows each of us considerable latitude
within our wide-ranging subdisciplines, and provides us great flexibility
in defining the current position. We are especially interested in
attracting candidates who can contribute new intellectual and social
perspectives to our stimulating and rewarding academic community. We
look forward to hearing from potential candidates who are interested in
the enclosed job description.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Wheaton College Department of Psychology invites applications for a
tenure-track assistant professorship in either Health Psychology or
Psychology of Language, beginning in the fall of 2000. Candidates whose
work also addresses gender, race, or ethnicity are especially encouraged
to apply. We seek a colleague who shares our commitment to liberal arts
education in the context of a gender-balanced, culturally diverse
curriculum and community. Our nine-member department provides a
supportive intellectual and social context for the development of new
colleagues, including fully paid, pre-tenure sabbaticals for one semester.

Training and research may be in any subdiscipline but all candidates
should be prepared to teach Introductory Psychology, a methods course, and
advanced courses in either Health Psychology or Language, perhaps
including a lab. We seek an innovative teacher/scholar who would actively
involve students in research, including senior honors theses.

For full consideration, please send, by February 1st, 2000, a letter of
application, a vita, one copy of selected publications, and evidence of
teaching effectiveness; and arrange to have three letters of reference
sent to: Derek Price, Chair, Psychology Search Committee, Wheaton
College, Norton, MA 02766.

Wheaton is a private, coeducational, liberal arts college of 1450 students
located within easy commuting distance of Boston and Providence. Wheaton
College is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. The
Department and the College are committed to attracting promising
candidates from groups presently under-represented in our community, with
the goal of maintaining and enriching an intellectually diverse learning
environment.
