Hi:

Anyone have any ideas on how Frankls theory of
motivation (that we are primary motivation is to seek
meaning in life) is similar to and/or different from
Maslow's hierarchy of needs? It would seem that one
of the main differences is that Maslow would argue
that you need to meet the lower needs first before you
could meet the self-actualization (i.e., meaning in
life) needs. Frankl seems to argue the opposite:
that we are all seeking meaning and can find meaning
even if we don't have the basic physiological and
safety needs met (as it was for him in the
concentration camp).

But they both seem to believe that are primary
underlying motive is humanistic in nature (that is, we
are not mechanistic like Freud and the behaviorists
argued).

Also, and really a question that interests me, how
does religion/spirituality/belief in a higher power
fit into Maslow's theory?

Will
