Lots of early psychologists did "dope". I'm not sure about James
particularly, but I know that James McKeen Cattell did as many drugs as
he could get his hands on. They really felt that drugs could help us
understand the human psyche better. I'm sure you know all about Freud
and cocaine. And even in the 1960's drugs were thought originally to
open us up to a whole new vast world of knowledge about ourselves.
