Jeff,

Thank you for the details.  The shamanic journeying "study"
you wrote about brought to mind the "cold reading" (or
here, "warm reading") techniques used by channellers/
mediums/psychics.  For example, we aren't told how many 
"misses" there were among the "hits"; I'll bet there were
plenty...

I'm also reminded of the Forer effect (or the Barnum effect),
whereby people will accept vague or convoluted
prophesies (a la Nostradamus), or personality descriptions
(a la horoscopes), and find ways to make them fit with the
facts.  

I think I'll take a closer look at transpersonal psychology
for my critical thinking course...
