Pam Shapiro asked "Must an author credit the self?" I don't know if it is of
any use to the discussion, but I'll pass on one anecdote:

Several years ago, I submitted a paper to a journal that used a blind review
process. One of the reviewers raised serious objections to the manuscript on
the grounds that its author had plagiarized many of Renner's ideas, and
hadn't cited these works nearly enough to justify the degree to which these
ideas were included in the paper.

The editor was mightily amused.
