Luis asked what happened next - there's not much to tell really.
The incident was discovered via contact with her parents afer the trip was over
and any moral/ethical issues about pretending to have your mother's cancer were
basically left to the family to sort out in their own way.
Since the field trip itself was already over it was not possible to insist on
her going on it and I "had a word with her" and there was work for her to do
that we'd not have set her had she been genuine. If she had had to have
treatment we would have had to try and find ways around a whole series of
potential problems and one field trip more or less would not have mattered that
much.
It may not be a great surprise to anyone to hear that she did not in fact
finish the course (A level Geography as it happens)and left college before the
exams in the summer.
I have become a bit more cynical, but I am still inclined to believe people when
they tell me that they are ill.
