For a start, see Azrin and Holz's article _Punishment_ (pp 380-447) in
Werner K. Honig's classic _Operant Behavior_ (A-C-C, 1966).
Note that this applies only for _punishment_ (suppressing a behavior by
presenting an aversive consequence after it occurs).
_Avoidance_ of aversive stimuli is maintained very well on (negative)
reinforcement schedules.
