I am new to TIPS (so, please be gentle)
I teach introductory psych at a community college and feel I should also
comment on Dawn's posting.
I also give my students a "quick" first exam...25 questions, usually on the
first chapter and lecture...I do this for two reasons...to give the student
a "feel" for my tests, and to let them also gauge how much, or little, they
actually studied for the exam...it really is an eye opener for most of
them...less than half actually passed, out of a class of 39!
I admit that I felt a bit depressed, but this is a learning process for both
me and my students and I actually give them a motivating lecture on how to
improve their study habits...it also ties in to a lot of what I instruct
them on...learning, STM, LTM, etc....
I always give a study guide and I don't consider it, "dumbing down"...
My study guide is focused on the topics that I want them to study for and
know not just for the exam, but to learn about beyond this course. I find
that using a study guide helps students a great deal in focusing on the
material, since there is so much in each chapter.
That is my first post...
Hope to read and learn a great deal from all of you...
Thank you,
