Using advice from fellow Tipsters last year, I am giving a 10 question quiz when we start each chapter. They did not do well on the first 2, except for the good students. They got 100%'s. I discovered that my textbook publishers have a website for the text. On the student section is a review quiz for each chapter. So this last time, I had them do the online quiz. They were allowed to use their books and look up the answers. Then they had to print out the score page. Has their name and all on it already. The quiz also shows them the correct answers after they complete it, so they can see where they went wrong. It worked so well that I am going to do this with every chapter. Even the good students said it forced them to read the chapter. Said it would be hard just to "look up" each answer. It also is saving class time. So I figure the activity is fulfilling my goal of getting them to read the chapter so we can have class discussion! I am very pleased and they liked it better than the in class quizzes.
