One possibility would be comparing two (or more) different Introductory
course organizations, such as a unit mastery course which broke the
material into small units with grades based on unit tests (no final exam)
and a conventional midterm/final class.
Of course, students would have to be randomly assigned, controls done (or
at least data collected) for time spent studying, etc.
Not easy, but I think that it is doable.
