Going through a historical paper on the 18th century chemist John
Dalton and his colour blindness, I came across the following
story about him today. Since I don't have my own story about what
dressing up did for me, perhaps this will do.
Dalton came down with some ailment, for which a doctor prescribed
a powder. A few days later the doctor asked how he was doing, and
Dalton replied that he was much improved. Oh, said the doctor,
it seems that my cure has worked. No, said Dalton. I wanted to
analyze it first, and so I haven't taken it yet.
(If you don't like that one, there are two others, one involving
wearing his red Oxford robe, and another concerning his donation
of his (colour blind) eyes to science. But this one seems more
relevant.)
Brief fashion observation: personally, I can't think of anything
sillier than a male wearing a ribbon tightly around his neck
which hangs down to his waist. But then, I'm not a College
Republican.
