I have a sad story that is related to this. One day, I was talking to the chair
of our department about Detroit and Windsor (for reasons that I probably shouldn't
go into). A student walked by, and he asked her, "Hey, if you leave the U.S. by
driving directly south from Detroit, what country will you enter?" She looked
confused, so he said, "What countries border the U.S.?" She still looked
confused. I don't remember how, but he managed to get us all out of the situation
without embarrassing her. The American education system is a marvel.
