...lots of reasons to want a dispensation. The best one I've heard happened to
a colleague of my wife's, at an unnamed major university in the deep south, at
which the homecoming election is truly a BIG DEAL (as in life-sized color
portraits of candidates--who often were, sexist as it may sound, truly lovely
young women).
Anyway. One such young woman came to her professor and said that she really
need a C in his course to be eligible to run for homecoming queen. He
promised to look into the possibility. When she returned to see what might be
done, he had to tell her no...that she was 18 inches from a C...that is 18
inches down the grade sheet from the cut-off for a C grade.
I will chime with an electronic pat-on-the-back for Beth. It seems to me we
uphold anything that looks like academic standards--as she appears to be
doing--one faculty member at a time, one student at a time...frustrating as it
may be to keep having to do the same blessed thing semester after semester
after semester after semester....
