Tipsters,

I'm putting the finishing touches on my syllabus for this semester (we
start Jan. 29!) and a ethical/legal question has come up.

Would it be legal for students to copy segments of (rented) movies for
an assignment? I would like to be able to use the clips subsequently in
class for demos. Would the implications be different if they taped them
off TV? Or if they owned the movie?

I'm thinking of having an extra credit assignment in which students
would tape ads, movies, or TV shows that would illustrate concepts
covered in class. Obviously this is a lot of work, so that's why it's
extra credit. Plus I'd have them for future classes. Has anybody done
something like this? Trouble-shooting tips?
