What timing... I just sent off an IRB protocol so that my Research Methods 
class could do that very assignment.

Not only do we have to do IRBs, but EVERYONE involved in ANY kind of data 
collection has to go through some sort of human subjects training.  The way 
most people satisfy this requirement is through an on-line tutorial that 
the NIH set up... Unfortunately for us psychology people, the NIH tutorial 
does not focus (or cover for that matter) issues that are important to 
psychology.  So, most of our psych. students simply page through the 
material as fast as their browser lets them, and then they receive a 
"certificate of completion."
