When I was a grad. student at U. of Waterloo, Herb Simon spent a few
days there giving various colloquia (& attending parties with
faculty & grad students in the evenings). From what I recall of his
description of the sequence of events, the work for which he received
the Nobel prize was done long before the prize was awarded and long
before his shifting interests brought him the joint appointment in
psych. and computer science. I also recall that he said his PhD. was
in political science. A man of broad vision, indeed.
