COMPETITIVE FORUMS
FOR PRESENTING STUDENT INDEPENDENT STUDIES

1. Journal of Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences

The Journal of Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences (JPBS) is a
refereed journal designed to publish undergraduate research. JPBS will
consider manuscripts in any experimental or theoretical area of
psychology but is particularly interested in submissions which are the
result of experimental or quasi-experimental work. Detailed guidelines
should be requested from: Robert W. Allan, Ph.D., JPBP, Department of
Psychology, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, NJ 07940, (201)
593-8561.

2. The Midwest Psychological Conference

The Midwest Psychological Conference (MPA) is held annually each May,
usually in Chicago. Past North Central College students have presented
their papers in both the conference itself and in the PSI CHI (student
Psychology honor society) section of MPA. The deadline for sending a
paper proposal occurs during the preceeding October, so students wishing
to have their papers considered for acceptance need to complete their
research far in advance of the actual conference. For more information,
contact the faculty member who is directing your independent study.

3. Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area

The Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA) is a consortium of
faculty from area colleges who have, as one of their aims, the promotion
of student research in the sciences and social sciences. They hold a
student conference each spring at which past North Central Psychology
students have presented their work. Students can give presentations in
the following areas: traditional research, professional experience
(e.g., internship experiences), library research, and poster sessions.
For more information, contact Dr. Jon Mueller in the Psychology
Department.

4. The ILLOWA Conference

Augustana College in Rock Island, IL hosts a Psychology Undergraduate
Conference for Illinois-Iowa (ILLOWA) in April of each year. For further
information, contact Robin L. Bowers, Ph.D., Department of Psychology,
Augustana College, Rock Island, IL 61201-2296, (309) 794-7300.

5. Mid-America Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference

The purpose of the Mid-America UPRC is to recognize and encourage
research by undergraduate Psychology students. Papers submitted can be
experimental, theoretical, or review and must be sponsored by a faculty
member at the student's undergraduate institution. The conference is
held in the spring at one of the several Indiana colleges which sponsor
it. For further information, contact Dr. Ray Bragiel, Department of
Psychology, Franklin College, 501 East Monroe, Franklin, IN 46131, (317)
738-8280.

6. Psi Chi

Psi Chi holds mini-conferences in conjunction with regional and
national Psychology meetings. To be eligible, you must be a member of
Psi Chi. For more information on these conferences, see the Psi Chi
Advisor or talk to any member of Psi Chi.

7. The Illinois School of Professional Psychology

The Illinois School of Professional Psychology (ISPP) sponsors an
annual Undergraduate Psychology Conference and Career Fair each spring.
As part of this Fair, undergraduate students are invited to submit
papers which may be theoretical, case study, or research based. Papers
are reviewed by a Program Committee which also awards cash prizes
ranging from $1,000 to $100 to the top seven papers. For further
information, contact Frank Gruba-McCallister, Ph.D., ISPP, 220 South
State Street, Chicago, IL 60604.

8. Undergraduate Research in Psychology Contest

The Undergraduate Research in Psychology Contest is sponsored by the
publishing company of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. The first prize
paper receives $1000; second through fourth place winners receive a
select library of books published by HBJ. Entries are judged on the
basis of originality, use of the formal scientific procedure, style,
importance of the question investigated, and strength of the conclusion.
For further information, contact Undergraduate Psychology Contest,
Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc., College Division/Marketing Department,
1250 Sixth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101.
