Rick,
I am reading along as a lurker, I suppose, and have been impressed with your
responses on the issue of religion and our US government. You enlarge my
perspectives, and I am glad of that. Still (no, I’m not throwing a sucker
punch) I am wondering how to salvage this independence between religion and
government …
The reason I am stymied, perhaps confused, is that I can imagine religions
that cover “all” possibilities, leaving no rightful realm for law. That is,
for any law, some religion could claim trespass on some tenet or belief. How
might this work out? How to have a social contract without laws that some
religion finds unacceptable? Now I wonder if this is an instance of “the
pound of flesh” – inseparable from the blood that sustains it?
I promise you, I am not trying to be adversarial – I truly wonder if you can
help me follow this thread of thought to a reasonable conclusion.
Good regards,
Beverly
