To keep this focussed on teaching, are you arguing Chuck that we
should be teaching students to apply their critical thinking
skills to only certain aspects of human behavior (e.g.,
astrology, ESP) and that it is inappropriate to focus these
critical capacities on religion and other culturally-sanctioned
beliefs?  My concern as a teacher is that once you go down this
road (i.e., a distinction between what you can and cannot examine
critically) you essentially give students an out from reflecting
critically on anything that they would rather not reconsider,
whether those are religious beliefs, political beliefs, beliefs
imparted by parents, or whatever.
