Actually, E. E. Cummings was not the one who started that spelling. Since many of his poems were written in lower case, one of the editors of an edition of his poems spelled it like that. It appears it was catchy enough to catch on. He did sometimes sign his name like that afterward, but as I recall, it was not his first preference. (I put my B.A. in English hat on for that one.)
