Yes, in fact, most (~80%) of the information to the LGN comes from the
cortex. The LGN gets input from the retina, the brainstem, and other
regions of the thalamus, as well.

A student asked me this question: we know the lateral geniculate sends  
information to the visual cortex (V1), but does the visual cortex send  
information back to the lateral geniculate?   I don't know.  Does it?   
Or more generally do higher areas feed back information to lower,  
earlier areas?
