Bill--Careers In Psychology is a good supplemental textbook. I have taught a
course dealing with careers in psychology and I invited guest
speakers--different types of psychologist and graduate programs to come speak
to my class throughout the semester.

TIPSters,
I will be teaching a new course in our department this fall that will explore
career opportunities (both jobs & grad school) for psychology majors. The
course will be a 2 credit course and the students will be either seniors or
soon to be seniors.
I am looking for recommendations for the course. The most pressing needs are
recommendations of books and other reading materials since I will have to
submit book orders soon. However, I am hoping to receive recommendations for
all aspects of the course. All ideas are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Because of the Waco fiasco, it has become a national date to remember the
intrusion of government on the individual rights of individual. But, I am sure
there are social psychologists who can speak better than about Waco and its

Eli Lilly Hit By $75 Million 'Brink's Pill Heist'
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124761278&ft=1&f=10
01
"The pills - stolen from the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Co. in
quantities big enough to fill a tractor-trailer - are believed to be
destined for the black market, perhaps overseas."
"Edward Sagebiel, a spokesman for Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly, put the
wholesale value of the drugs at $75 million and said they included the
antidepressants Prozac and Cymbalta and the anti-psychotic Zyprexa. No
narcotics or other painkillers were in the warehouse, he said."
I can't decide if I'm surprised or not. Even if they sold them for a
1/3 of their value on the black market, they'd still pull in $25 million
(minus expenses, such as the cost of ropes). Seems like they'd get more
for narcotics, but then the narcotics are probably more tightly guarded.
On a more sobering note, it speaks to the demand that's been created for
psychoactive medication.

From the "Did They Really Do a Poll on That?" Department:
Cottenelle, manufacturer of toilet paper, has uncovered a significant
distinction among people that is almost at the level of importance
of being right-handed vs. left-handed, namely:
Do you you prefer your toilet paper to roll over or roll under?
Their finding:
Over: 72%
Under: 28%
Apparently no one admitted to not having the paper off a roller
and just on its side. More info (if one is curious about such things)
is available at:
http://pr-usa.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=350205&Itemid=95
Of course, the psychological profession is present to help with the
interpretation of such results of staggering importance. Quoting from
the article:
|Cottonelle brand consulted Dr. Gilda Carle, psychotherapist and
|internationally renowned relationship expert, for her observations
|on basic character traits associated with how people roll. According
|to Dr. Gilda, "People who roll over like taking charge, crave
|organization and are likely to overachieve. It seems to me that
|Americans are passionate about rolling over due to the sense of
|control that it gives them."
Dr. Carle is reported to have gotten a Ph.D. in Educational
Leadership at NYU, meaning that she got it through NYU's
school of education and not the graduate school of arts and
science (whose faculty has made a sigh of relief). I have never
met Dr. Carle nor have heard of her prior to this press release.
I suspect that there will be wave of undergraduate research
proposals looking at over/underism and its relationship to measures
of personality such as the Myer-Briggs and other personality
tests that are readily available on the internets.
Also be prepared for an increase in people's use of the phrase:
"Coz that's how I roll!"

I have an interesting student issue and not much time to decide. I have
student who is doing poorly in my class. We both believe she can improve
her performance, but so far she is failing. It probably makes the most
sense for the student to withdraw and take the class another semester.
The deadline for withdrawing is 5:00 today.
However she is just about done with her paper for the class and believes
she has done well. I have not seen it, but from talking with her expect
it to be much better than her exam performance. I change the paper topic
each semester, so a paper from Spring 2010 would not normally work for
Spring 2011. The student has asked if she can use the grade from the
paper for 2010 in the 2011 semester.
I have not had a request like this before. I am not sure it would be
legal with the registrar. I would like to know what other Tipststers
think as I decide how to respond.
Thanks!

We already knew the answer to this question. Ann Landers put the question to
her readers back in the 70's and got 15,000 responses with 81% preferring over.
Michael Feldman ("What Do You Know") more recently used it as a poll question
and got 76% preferring over. So either the the preference is diminishing over
time or there are methodological issues. More research is needed.

Subject: One Reason Why Dealing with Insurance Companies is Hellish
From: "Mike Palij" <[email protected]>
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2010 20:39:07 -0400
X-Message-Number: 13
The Reuters news agency reports that the insurance company
Assurant (previously known as Fortis) speicifically targeted policy
holders who developed HIV/AIDS for termination of coverage.
The Reuters story is available here:
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE62G2DO20100317
The findings come to light because a young man who was diagnosed
with HIV after getting the health insurance policy was denied coverage
and he sued the company. He won his case in a lower court and
also won his case when the insurance company appealed. One
of the shocking things that came out during the trials is provided
in the following quote:
|Previously undisclosed records from Mitchell's case reveal that
|Fortis had a company policy of targeting policyholders with HIV.
|A computer program and algorithm targeted every policyholder
|recently diagnosed with HIV for an automatic fraud investigation,
|as the company searched for any pretext to revoke their policy.
|As was the case with Mitchell, their insurance policies often were
|canceled on erroneous information, the flimsiest of evidence, or
|for no good reason at all, according to the court documents and
|interviews with state and federal investigators.
Jerome Mitchell who brought the suit was able to get his treatment
paid through other means. He will be paid $10 million for Assurant's
actions.
In his blog, Paul Krugman also reviews this case and wonders whether
Assurant's cases was an outlier, a low probability event. No, in
fact, it is a common practice among many insurance companies.
In Assurant's case, the practice allowed the company to make $150
million between 2003 to 2007. It is a profitable practice for other
companies; see:
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/17/demons-and-demonization/
Outside of being purely cynical about any large profit making
business, how would one treat this as an exercise in critical thinking
and analysis? Only people's lives depend on it.

No, it is Psalm 14:1. Because the Bible was not originally written
in English (which may come as a surprise to some people), there
are various versions or translations of this passage. In my copy
of the New Oxford Annotated Bible (3rd ed; 2001), it appears
on page 785 Hebrew Bible. A webpage with various translations
is available here:
