No, the movie was based on the Kesey novel, which far predated the Rosenhan
study. Better to ask whether the Rosenhan study was a spin off from the novel.

Perhaps I have mentioned this before on this list. However, my favorite part of
the Rosenhan story comes after the experiment, and is rarely recounted. After
the study had been publicized, and various psychiatrists and mental hospital
officials had offered their array of excuses and criticisms, one of them
challenged Rosenhan to send out more fake patients, guaranteeing that he would
identify them. Rosenhan agreed. After a period of time past, the psychiatrist
claimed to have spotted some fairly large number of confederates (17 comes to
mind). When Rosenahn was asked if his challenger had caught all the
confederates, he revealed that he had sent out none at all in the intervening
months.
