Dear Tipsters,
Following Jim's pontificating, I shall add some more sermonizing from Bishop's.
We have a sequence of statistics in the first semester followed by a methods
course and a separation more advanced statistics course in the second semester.
This permits Jim's idea of allowing students to concentrate on statistics,
especially at the beginning and then it permits the methods instructor (me) to
teach the materials with constant reference to the statistics that can be used
for the design being discussed.
At the same time, because the students are taking more stats, the more complex
designs can be understood conceptually in the methods course and then in terms
of factorial ANOVA from the stats course.
All majors do this. Honours students proceed to an advanced methods course and
a multivariate stats course.
Like Jim, I have no studies to support the value of this system, but we find
that it is fairly to refer to material from the previous courses or the
simultaneous ones when we wish to reinforce certain points.
Oh yes, and by the way, in the methods course we have the students collect
data, analyze them and write formal reports so they see the stats in action
with numbers that they were involved with.
Sincerely,
Stuart
