It seems like most course management systems will do what you're looking
for (sharing documents, resources, calendar, blogging).  

 

Barring that, consider ning.com (better at communication than sharing
resources) or pbworks.com (better at sharing resources than
communication).  With ning.com, you can set up groups within the larger
group space.  It may be that Google Docs will also work just fine.
Without knowing more about what you're trying to accomplish, I would
recommend a ning.com/pbworks.com combination.  Both are user-friendly.
Whatever you choose needs to be as user-friendly as possible since
you're introducing 100+ people to technologies they may not have
experienced before.
