I'm pretty sure many of our clinicians or other biopsychologists on the list could straighten this out, but I believe neither Wernicke's nor Broca's area are dysfunctional in schizophrenia. Rather, it is the flight of ideas that gives rise to the garbled speech. I'm also not sure that "word salad" is used much anymore, but I could be wrong. At any rate, there is a distinct difference between the speech of someone with schizophrenia and that of someone with aphasia, even Wernicke's. When I worked in a neurology department, Tony Damasio said that "word salad" was an indicator of a poor facility, and that even in schizophrenia it was rare.

Various neuroscientists have speculated that "speaking in tongues" is the effect of a temporal lobe seizure. Regards, Chris -- Christopher D.
