Sounds like a good idea. I've rarely had a TA that could provide good feedback.
The usual consequence of giving papers to a TA is to have the papers delayed in
giving them back to the students, without any improvement in feedback provided
beyond what I do. I've seen that as training for the TA which the students who
write the papers pay for. I doubt that outsourcing the marking would lead to
quicker feedback, though, but probably would result in better comments for the
student writers. I also doubt that my department would pay for it. It would
certainly be more expensive than the current system and current students acting
as TA's would not benefit, which I believe they do in the current system. It
might be a good outsourcing for distance learning institutions.
