Hebb formulated the idea of "cell assemblies" and along with other
physiological constructs that purport to conclude neuronal brain changes, there
does not seem to be any indication whether the changes are qualitative within
the cell. But the emphasis seem to be
on the growth in the quantity of cells.Other studies that have concluded brain
growth, especially the Rosenwiez (sp) that showed that rats
raised in an enriched environment had more brin cells daveloped than those
raised in an impoverished environment.Again quantity not quality. So Hebb's
cell assemblies are quantitave leading to improved performance but not
necessarily changes in the quality of the cells. Another indication that
quantity overrides quality is in the old search for the engram for
memory(Lashley???) where performance was more of a function of the quantity of
cells extirpated and not necessarily the location of the cells. It is also
interesting that alchol addiction leads to a dimishing of
brain cells and nothing is said about the quality.
In a theoretical psychology frame of mind while sipping margaritas.
