I'm also skeptical that Democrats don't also suffer from either/or thinking. They suffer from a different type and in different areas.
In my opinion, the open thinkers willing to consider shades of grey are the independents. Another aspect of this, and I do not know the study but I believe it has been shown in a study by NSF or some such group, is that faculty become increasingly conservative and more likely to be religious at smaller and less prestigious schools.
