Referencing my earlier post about no longer using my Tablet for grading papers,
none of that means that I think you shouldn't ask for a Tablet.

I write all over my PowerPoint slides during class, and the touch screen makes
it very easy to jump around to different slides when using PPT's presenter view
(http://sfrantz.wordpress.com/2009/11/26/powerpoint-2007-presenter-view/).

You might also want to check out Classroom Presenter (CP) as an alternative to
PowerPoint. See:
http://sfrantz.wordpress.com/2009/04/14/classroom-presentations-unplugged. CP
was designed for Tablets. While you lose some PPT features (like hyperlinks
and embedded video), you gain some power. You can broadcast your presentation
over your college's wifi. Any student in your class with a laptop, can 'grab'
your presentation. Not only can they see everything you write in real time on
their own laptops, they can add their own notes to the screen. Then... you can
have students send a particular screen to you with the click of a button. You
can then choose to display, anonymously, some of those screens to the rest of
the class. If you had a class where students did a lot of group work, I think
this would be a great feature. You would only need a handful of students to
make this worthwhile. For instance, the next time I teach Research Methods, I
can see myself giving my students small group activities to which this
technology would lend itself nicely.

As a little bonus, CP comes a built-in polling feature. You start a poll, and
your laptop-wielding students can click A-E with their response.

A small warning. Classroom Presenter hasn't been updated since August 2008, so
I don't know what their plans are for this program.

Powerpoint 2010 comes with a broadcast feature, but students aren't able to
communicate back to the instructor, take notes on the slides, or save the
slides after the presentation. I'm hoping this will change in the next
incarnation.
