Ever wonder why hospital waiting rooms in New York city are very
large?
There are cultural parameters to this: when a Hispanic is hospitalized the
whole family and extended family show up for visitations and that is alot of
people. As the only cross-cultural dude on Tips, collectivist cultures can
influence design on both the structural and functional levels. As a matter of
with growing immigrants from collectivist cultures we can expect expansion and
divergence not within the current Euro- and -US
centric paradigm-for examples, whereas a white child may tell parents "don't
touch me or else I will call 911", we are not likely to hear these words from a
hispanic child. The immigrants are also likely to change perspectives on child
discipline and respect for parents and the elderly. If disrespect for parents
was money, white American kids would all be millionaires. We should not expect an
expansion of elderly
nursing homes either-hispanics do not put their parents in nursing homes, only
white folks do that.
Other changes that may be expected as immigrants show their influences would be
in the area of work ethic and gender roles.
Lots of this stuff will be in my book THE CROSS-CULTURAL JOURNAL OF MICHAEL.J
