I personally did not care for the term borderline because it implied a steady
state, but I prefer the use of the term "marginal' because it expresses a
dynamism of someone who may have problems in coping but is still able to
maintain an err of adjustment strategically to deal with a prevailing situation.
I would not do away with the idea of borderline even though I prefer the term
"marginal",neither should it imply personality disorders only.As the
cross-cultural dude on Tips, being borderline or marginal can characterize the
behavior of immigrants who are U.S-centric challenged eliciting a variety of
adjustment and maladjustment behaviors from suicide to multiple killings as thy
try to cope while moving back and forth between cultures.
I devote a whole chapter to the various modes of adjustment of immigrants in
my work(now in preparation) THE CROSS-CULTURAL
JOURNAL OF MICHAEL J. SYLVESTER.
I would not do away with the term as yet. Need to how some immigrants will
fare.
