Canada negotiated civilly, debated rationally, and independence was 
agreed to by mutual consent (though we kept the Queen -- she's here 
right now, as a matter of fact -- because she is just so scrumptious). 
Of course, the initial taking of Quebec was done in that "other" way, 
but it was the mid-18th century, and the French and English were 
fighting everywhere. You called it the French Indian War. Canada called 
it The Conquest of Quebec. But both were really just local 
manifestations of the Seven Years War

In all seriousness, what Canadians did fight for was "responsible 
government" (i.e., self-government by elected representatives). There 
were rebellions in both Upper (Ontario) and Lower (Quebec) Canada in the 
late 1830s.
