Maybe not new or inventive but still worth mentioning. My experience followed by research I've conducted shows that the type of test students expect to be given will significantly influence whether they choose to read their text or not. Right or wrong, students frequently assume that they can guess the correct answer with MC tests but not as much essay tests. My surveys of students have clearly demonstrated that they normally spend far more time and use the text far more when they expect an essay test over the text material. I realize this is not what folks want to hear but the data couldn't be clearer.
