Dr.Laura was right in pointing out that black folks do use the N word among themselves and on cable TV comedy. As a matter of fact there are many occasions when in a small group of black PhDs and professionals we all have used the N word among ourselves. Alot of whites do not understand why it seems ok for black folks to allude to the term but when white folks use the term there are punitive social ramifications. Well, the answer is simple: the N word when used by blacks assume a different mindset than when used by whites-nothing more nothing less. This is almost like a reverse leveling the psycholinguistic field. To seek a physiological analogy, why can't someone tickle himself or herself? The context of behavior is critical in understanding the preponderance of the effects. Another comment of Dr.Laura that seems to be congruent within the counseling paradigm is that if one is uncomfortable with an interracial marriage then one should not get into it.If I am not mistaken I think that one of the criteria for maladjustment is that of "personal discomfort" and the other is "social disruption". As the cross-cultural dude on Tips, and incidentally the only black on Tips,I would perceive the Dr.Laura scenario and its circumventing implications,as a "well-meaning clash."
