It is said that Wertheimer got the idea for the phi phenomenon while
watching lights at a train crossing. The story has been questioned. See
Mitchell Ash's book on the history of Gestalt.

Koehler did the studies for _Mentality of Apes_ on Teneriffe in the
Canary Islands. I don't know that he was "abandoned" there. He was
unable to travel due to the outbreak of WWI. There was a book a decade
or so ago (_A Whisper of Espionage_) claiming that he was actually sent
there by the German gov't to spy on shipping lanes (there is no natural
ape colony on Teneriffe; Koehler was an expert in long-distance radio
communication at a time when that skill was rare), but the idea seems a
little far-fetched.
